ABSTRACT

Organisational contracting and review involves initial discussion with managers or senior staff about a request to set up a reflective practice group, the purpose of such a group, the practical and organisational support needed to make it work and development of a plan for ongoing feedback. In recognition of the ubiquity of the difficulties, Contracting and Review at the Organisational Level has become a foundational stage of the Intersubjective Model. Managers rarely need to know about the specific content of what is spoken about in reflective practice. The theory of social defence systems suggests that the practitioner who is trying to bring about any sort of change with individuals in an organisation where there are strong defences at play should operate at two levels. The updated social defence paradigm goes some way towards explaining why staff may feel so ambivalent towards reflective practice.
