ABSTRACT

Looking Back is the stage when the group gives space for reflections in response to previous meetings, following up on thoughts which may have occurred after the last meeting or in response to meetings before then. The Looking Back stage exists in recognition of the fact that the development of reflective practice takes time and occurs in relation to the lived experience of work, rather than only through reflective discussion. The Looking Back stage provides the structure for a process of fluid and ongoing learning and the space to follow through on a line of thinking. The interview was carried out as part of an in-depth study into how participation in a reflective practice group impacted the way trainee clinical psychologists thought about their clients and their emerging identities as practitioner psychologists. The Looking Back stage functions to relieve the pressure and to create a realistic working pace for the group as a whole.
