ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief historical overview of how our society has come to grips with global warming. It traces the scientific milestones that helped establish the role of human activities as a key contributing factor. The chapter briefly discusses how climate change issues have gained political saliency. It highlights some of the efforts of the international community toward legally binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gases and features global, regional, and local initiatives and commitments toward “low-carbon cities.”
