ABSTRACT

Listening-centered communication is described and the HURIER Listening Model is explained as a framework for improving listening effectiveness. There are six distinct components in the listening model—hearing, understanding, remembering, interpreting, evaluating, and responding. Specific listening outcomes are associated with each component. The text guides students as they:

determine which listening outcomes are most important for their career success

identify the skills that will help them achieve a particular outcome

develop selected skills through activities associated with each outcome

The organization of the text is explained and students are encouraged to set personal SMART goals for achieving desired listening outcomes.
