ABSTRACT
Teachers who follow this capstone research-based model need to be aware of a personal caveat. I offer a note of caution for those seeking promotion based on student evaluations. In 2017, I sought a double merit increase and was only successful in a single merit increase based on my publications rather than my less-than-stellar student evaluations. The Public Sociology Capstone will never rank highly in terms of organisation. The beginning of the semester has the students working in teams with unfamiliar people, meeting their community liaison for the first time and coming to grips with the research design of the project. This initial period is frenetic and difficult to organise. The students dutifully and literally answered the question on the university’s student evaluation questionnaire.
