ABSTRACT

The general attitude of the therapist toward the patient is extremely important, of course. The other prominent therapist deliberately provoked the patient in an attempt to elicit hostility from him and then called it transference. Transference, however, is by definition misplaced hostility originating from objects of childhood. The therapist must have sympathy for the patient's suffering, and must understand that, frequently, there is more torture than is evident on the surface. With schizophrenia, one can do what is not possible in a non-schizophrenic state that is go from dead to alive. The therapist has to be able to think in this apparently irrational way. The whole therapy is a battle to weaken the superego, and allow the ego to get stronger. So, the therapist must consistently behave and feel that she is on the patient's side. One characteristic that is absolutely necessary for a therapist to possess is an ability to tolerate non-responsiveness.
