ABSTRACT

The first half of Chapter 5 explores the phenomenon of musical Nationalism in Eastern Europe in the 19th century, and its relationship to political Nationalism and the collapse of the Austrian Empire. The works of Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák are examined as examples of two different approaches to the writing of Nationalist music, one that focuses primarily on the tone poem, the other on the symphony.

The second half Chapter 5 looks at the subject of Nationalism in Russia. The “Mighty Five” are compared with Tchaikovsky as examples of contrasting approaches to the creation of a Nationalist spirit in Russian music.
