ABSTRACT

In depth psychology, the term Shadow refers to the hidden parts of the unconscious that can be positive or negative. This chapter looks at the concept of Shadow more deeply and will assist in understanding, as much as we can, both the conscious and unconscious motivations of people like the Nazi doctors considered in the previous chapter. Projection of unconscious complexes onto others is explored and illustrated such as that which Dr. Rosalind Franklin experienced by James Watson and Francis Crick. Kalsched’s self-care system provides deeper understanding of Shadow. Taoism will also be considered which may seem curious but it actually connects directly with understanding the notion of shadow as well as to the Chinggis Khan—Ch’ang-Ch’un dialogues. Finally, we begin to understand how atrocities still occur today such as those perpetrated by white supremacists, religious ideologues, and on a larger scale, those who commit genocide and torture. That perpetrators of these dark actions are unable to see the source for their hatred is in their unconscious will be examined.
