ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the multiple narratives of entangled spaces that are constantly being reassembled at concrete sites of urban practice in South Africa. It shows how public spaces change in the country and offers a framework to conceptualise the evolution of public space in cities. The discussion argues for a reconsideration of public space to make room for the enactment of the values of an ecological worldview and recognises that they should accommodate different publics with alternative needs. This implies an understanding of the everyday needs and multiple realities of African cities and the Global South and suggests that their potential towards regenerative public space and an inclusive urban commons be found and developed.
