ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the key changes in the nature of our occupational and socio-economic structure that have produced what is known as the 'information society'. In so doing, it attempts to explain why there is such a great interest in and reaction to the new technology. The chapter discusses few possible perspectives on where the nature of the so called 'microelectronics revolution' is taking us. It provides a brief overview of 'new office technology', as well as the phases in the development of the 'microelectronics revolution'. A crucial distinction will be made between the nature of the earlier computing technology and new microelectronic technology.
