ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the issues common to English language learners in the South Asian region, pointing to the relevance of the study and its findings. It examines the study in terms of achieving the set objectives. Post-colonial South Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh invest a considerable amount of money and resources into making enormous efforts to improve English language education. The study identifies some interesting language attitudes that exist in South Asian societies in relation to the English language and its speakers, and they seem to be unique to the region. The vast majority of South Asian learners, especially rural and semi-rural learners, develop language attitude anxiety(LAA). The influence of LAA is manifested in their speech performance and exhibits itself in a lack of confidence to speak English. To understand the psychology of language learners, is made to locate it in the LAA that most South Asian learners struggle with in learning English.
