ABSTRACT

Thinking like a critic requires four distinct but related kinds of thinking: description, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. Chapter 3 provides an overview of them and explains their relationships. You will learn how to monitor your thinking so you don’t jump immediately to “interpretation” which novice critics offer as their opinion. Good criticism requires rigorous control of thinking because each kind of thinking provides unique knowledge that is essential for insightful criticism. Further, you will learn how to distinguish critical and creative thinking and how to properly use both to develop your best possible critical analysis of rhetoric.
