ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 introduces Carl Jung, a psychologist that was a contemporary of Freud. Early in his career, Jung was deeply influenced by Freud, who acted as an early mentor to the younger man. But eventually, Jung broke with Freud over issues in Freud’s theories about childhood sexuality and the spiritual dimension of human consciousness. Jung would go on to formulate his own theories of the psyche that in many ways built on Freud’s work but also surpassed it. In the exercises for actors section of this chapter, we explore the use of dreams and “active imagination” in the training and character-building processes, as well as the concept of “archetypes” and how they can be applied to the actor’s challenge.
