ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 explains the intersection of business and human rights with the fields of corporate social responsibility, and creating shared value. Despite clear corollaries and areas of overlap, human rights have not been a significant feature in discussions of creating shared value or corporate social responsibility to date. Likewise, the UN Guiding Principles (and the commentary to them) do little to engage with the area of creating shared value. Chapter 4 also examines the business case for a corporation to address its adverse impacts on society, and on human rights specifically. It concludes that there are compelling reasons why respecting human rights can benefit business’ bottom line. As a recent study demonstrates, the quantitative benefits in financial terms to a company respecting human rights are substantial.
