ABSTRACT

It was during the summer of 2018 that a man came up to us after one of our presentations and asked if we knew that Australian [sic] professor Hattie. Hattie is a New Zealander, we told him, but yes, of course we knew of him. The man continued by explaining that, in his opinion, Hattie was the person responsible for him having to retire a year earlier than scheduled. What was the case? One fine day, the directors of his school announced that, in keeping with the ideas of John Hattie, henceforth homework would for all intents and purposes be forbidden because it didn’t work and class sizes would be increased since class size had no effect on learning. Less work and bigger classes meant fewer teachers, and so the man was ‘let go’ a year early …
