ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses termination issues related to clients, supervision, and self. During the termination phase, it is important to process all the important elements necessary for a healthy good-bye. Hopelessness is a common client response to termination that leaves both the client and the counselor in a precarious situation. Clients who present with hopelessness will often intensify their symptoms as a way to prolong the therapeutic relationship. The process of termination, although much more complicated than just saying "Goodbye," always must eventually end with the final farewell. The goal of the process element of termination is to provide enough time to discuss pertinent issues so that both parties understand the purpose of the forced termination and the possible next steps. Confronting the struggle of termination within the supervision relationship can then lead to improvements in discussing the issue with clients.
