ABSTRACT

This chapter is about visible and invisible violence in Latin America and explores the concept and reality of violence in its diverse expressions. Johan Galtung’s approach on structural, cultural and physical violence is taken as a starting point for the development of the concept of violence denoted in this book. Thereafter, the use of violence concepts as tools for the analysis and measure of the economic, social, institutional and political life in the Latin America region is explained as well. These concepts are linked, finally, to the main state foreign and local actors in their relationships with the main private foreign and local actors.
