ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with different aspects of twin identity, again by addressing various themes. It focuses on this issue because twins had a great deal to say about identity. The chapter addresses joint identity, twin identity as something from within, performance of twin identity, identity confusion, twin identity tied to one's name and, finally, twin identity as a social construct. It argues that a complex web of influences, including culture and society, informs how twins construct, claim and perform their identities. The author makes use of his field note observations and personal reflections to clarify his argument. Another observation of these twins' behaviour concerned demonstrating how well each knew the other. The chapter addresses extracts in which twins speak in a way that suggests that their identity as twins is centred on something inside them.
