ABSTRACT

This chapter explores further challenges and dilemmas in relation to the analytic frame and with reference to the therapeutic alliance and relationship. The analytic frame is intended to provide a structure for the work of psychotherapy such that any deviations can be considered in light of the patient’s dynamics. Denial of the reality of time or omnipotent attempts to master time can be seen as a refusal of this most fundamental element of our human existence. Like time boundaries, paying for psychotherapy is another part of reality that can throw up difficulties around the therapeutic relationship and can also be the receptacle for hostile feelings towards the therapist. Some patients may feel uncomfortable to receive a reduction in the fee, not wishing to receive any favours and such allowances can be inhibiting in therapy, particularly if the patient is to feel free to explore all aspects of their feelings towards their therapist, good and bad.
