ABSTRACT

Sikhs are considered a ‘model minority’ community, due not only to their economic and educational attainments, but also their integration into British society. These successes do not mean that the Sikh community’s experiences have always been without problems. For example, one is consciously aware that they have always experienced and been subject to some form of racism. The media content analysis was done via an audit of Nexis.com, a comprehensive news and business information online research tool. The two survey periods were August 2014 to August 2015, and August 2016 to August 2017, and the focus of this audit was to study articles that included reference to the word ‘Islamophobia’ anywhere in the text, and to see whether Sikh issues were addressed. To support the academic and media analysis, empirical research was undertaken to gather information on individual experiences of mistaken identity and Islamophobia among the Sikh community, mostly in the UK but also in the US.
