ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a framework for preparation and execution of the pull production plans and schedules. Toyota originated methods of pull production and material requirements planning and, consequently, has become the standard for planning, scheduling, and control of production based upon those methods. Some functions of enterprise resource planning/ material requirements planning systems remain the same with pull/heijunka production, in particular functions for demand management, rough-cut capacity planning, master scheduling, and aspects of requirements planning. The centralized system comprises staff personnel and systems that perform demand forecasting, order entry, rough-cut capacity planning, master production scheduling (MPS), and material requirements planning. The role of the decentralized system is to oblige the production requirements as specified in the master production schedules and daily schedules. The main functions of the centralized system are monthly planning of the MPS, daily scheduling of final production, and materials forecasting and procurement.
