ABSTRACT

This chapter asks why sexual management and eugenics turned out differently in Russia, Sweden, and Nazi Germany. In the Soviet Union, the communists wanted to reshape sex as they reshaped society. The Swedes established a more moderate form of socialism in which a welfare state would enable sexual happiness through help for families and birth control, but also discipline those who did not fit. The Nazis could also be seen as revolutionaries who wanted to manage sex for the purposes of the state, but in the service of their murderous vision of racial purity.
