ABSTRACT
This book begins with the Greeks and Romans, because Plato’s ideas on men’s spiritual love for each other influenced concepts of same-sex desire for centuries. Furthermore, the classical world allows us to examine a culture whose understanding of sexual identity was radically different from our own. A Greek or Roman male citizen could have sex with a male slave, a youth, or a foreigner and still be regarded as masculine.
