ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Arab education system in Israel. The education system in Israel maintains two separate education systems for its citizens: one for Palestinian-Israelis and another for Jewish-Israelis. Although many features of the education system in East Jerusalem are similar to the more general system of the Palestinian-Israelis, the overall managing framework of budgets, supervision, and teachers’ employment conditions are different and separate from the so-called Arab sector system in the Israeli Ministry of Education. In the academic year 2015–2016, there were about 105,200 students in the Arab education system in East Jerusalem. Of these, 19,035 students were registered to private schools, such as schools managed by the Islamic Waqf, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East authorities, or various Christian churches. Research on the Arab education system observes that the changes in the early years induced deficits that are apparent in the system.
