ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the responsibilities and causes of the failings in the education system while also revealing the external failings with respect to the state’s interference in the curriculum taught in East Jerusalem schools. The curriculum taught in the East Jerusalem schools is a Palestinian curriculum. However, these schools do fall within the Israeli jurisdiction leading to a political power struggle over education. The chapter suggests that the implicit motives behind the Israeli censorship policy and outline the effects of this policy on school atmosphere. It reviews the content of history textbooks and considers additional possible reasons for the change in censorship policy. In the power struggle between the forces managing schools in East Jerusalem, Israel is using its domination to infiltrate the power source of the PA – the curriculum – and to discourage students from studying this curriculum altogether.
