ABSTRACT

After surveying 274 women, 20 women were interviewed in depth. Collectively the women interviewed have over 500 years of experience working and leading in organizations in jobs ranging from airline pilot to federal government executive to stay-at-home parent to library fundraiser. They range in age from 24 to 60. They are black, white, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, married, divorced, some with and some without children. In certain instances they worked for pay; in other instances they worked as volunteers. In this selection of interview excerpts, the women share their stories of pivotal points in their development as leaders.
