ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the major official sources of statistics and the methods adopted in using the sources. The official unemployment statistics refer to the number of registered unemployed that is people who have registered at Employment Exchanges as seeking work. The definition of the cotton industry which people adopt is that it is a number of firms whose principal products are made from cotton alone. The increased production after 1952 caused output to reach a post-war maximum in 1954. In the case of cotton there are the activities of spinning, doubling, weaving, and finishing. The basic sources of export and import statistics of values and quantities of commodities are the monthly Accounts relating to Trade and Navigation of the United Kingdom, and the Annual Statement of Trade. For the statistician, the Censuses provide the basis of statistical information from which many types of statistics are derived.
