ABSTRACT

The Crossover Youth Practice Model (CYPM) is a multi-system practice model that targets youth who are involved in the child welfare (CW) and/or juvenile justice system. Practitioners and researchers need to incorporate protective factors in intervention design and implementation, as these factors can promote resilience and their strengthening could help prevent the cascading negative outcomes of child maltreatment. While assessment of risk factors that contribute to many negative outcomes is important, assessing protective factors is just as important. Within CW, promising responses include providing support for foster families who have children in their care who may have broken the law. The CYPM emphasizes the importance of data collection, particularly the use of cross-system data to inform program and policy decisions. However, given that in most states CW and juvenile justice systems operate as separate entities, there are several challenges that need to be addressed.
