ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the technology and equipment necessary for transcription. Chief among these are transcription software, headphones and foot pedals. This chapter details sending and receiving audio files electronically, the different types of audio file formats and how to manage them, and compares some of the most popular transcription software packages. It describes different types of headphones and foot pedals. While most people use digital recorders these days, transcriptionists occasionally encounter cassette tapes, so this chapter explains the process of digitizing cassettes. It also looks at naming conventions for managing transcripts, and using text expansion to save time when transcribing.
