Ottoman Empire was pushed into the war by German intrigue. Authors holding the latter view have charged that even though some Turkish leaders may have co-operated with the Germans, the Porte was not really free in its decisions, owing to the ever present threat of German guns.4 Some historians have gone even further in this direction by asserting that Admiral Souchon's attack on Russia was launched entirely without Turkish knowledge and consent.5
