ABSTRACT

The Shikshapatri has gone digital as a seminal sacred scripture and object of veneration in Swaminaryan Hinduism. A British Millennium Project of the New Opportunities Fund has placed a digitized form of the manuscript presented by Swaminarayan that is currently in the Indian Institute Library of Oxford University's Bodleian Library. The aim of the project is to digitize 'one of the great historical treasures of British Hinduism, and a wide range of supporting materials, and make these available in an interactive multimedia format for use by a wide range of individuals and institutions'. This chapter provides the historical context for the meeting in 1830 of the Governor of the Bombay Presidency with the founder of Swaminarayan Hinduism and a description of the manuscript presented by Swaminarayan. Sahajanand Swami gave a copy of the Shikshapatri to Sir John Malcolm at the conclusion of their meeting at the residence of the Acting Political Agent in Rajkot on 26 February 1830.
