ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author argues that the city is a theatre where terrorism is performed for people who live and work in a city. He explores the stories of seven witnesses who work in inner-city Melbourne. The author introduces the informants and the himself to contextualize the stories they provide – stories that highlight what it means to be a worker, a witness and a victim in a time of terror. He then explores the stories of Patrick, Paul and Courtney – all three of whom worked for the same retail organization in the inner city – and Marcus and Timothy, who worked elsewhere in inner Melbourne. The author finally suggests that spectacular terrorist attacks like 9/11, 3/11 and 7/7 in many ways never end: they continue to explode in the minds of witnesses and victims of terrorism throughout the world.
