ABSTRACT

Sven Olof Joachim Palme, born on January 30, 1927, was assassinated on February 28, 1986 on a Stockholm street while heading home from a movie theater with his wife, Lisbet. The Palme family theory suggested that Palme arranged his own killing or that his wife, Lisbet, and son were behind it. The Swedish police theory proffered the notion that fascist elements in the country's police force were behind the assassination. This chapter looks briefly at some of the other theories for which information exist and examines the South African connection in more depth. The investigators of the Palme case received another lead on a South African connection. Palme recognized the need to provide greater political and material support to the front-line states and to find ways to support the resistance movements inside South Africa, especially the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the independent trade unions.
