ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the types of quantitative American and German news, the economic and monetary policy news for both countries. News on German country's economic situation is enmeshed with news on the European convergence towards the Maastricht criteria and on the debate over the adequacy of monetary and fiscal policy in Germany and in the other major European countries. Qualitative and quantitative news was gathered for Germany and the United States, with a prevalence of quantitative news for the United States. The quantitative economic indices collected in Newsmetrics have turned out to be the most significant ones from the point of view of the markets' reaction, especially in terms of the differences between actual and expected values. The Newsmetrics collection of political, economic and financial market news for Japan is less systematic than for the other countries in the database, which have a remarkable coverage of market news, under the code MJA.
