ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a comprehensive methodology for the analysis of command and control scenarios, and shows how the previous human factors methods can be combined and integrated to answer questions of direct relevance to engineers and designers. The Event Analysis of Systemic Teamwork (EAST) methodology was developed specifically to examine the work of distributed teams of people in complex socio-technical systems; so called command, control, communications, computers and intelligence scenarios. The internal structure of the EAST methodology can be broken down into three layers: layer 1 – data collection methods; layer 2 – data analysis methods; and layer 3 – representational methods. The Communications Usage Diagram is another task analysis technique which in the current application provides an opportunity to systematically critique the communications technology in use within C4i. Propositional Networks are like semantic networks in that they contain nodes and links between nodes.
