ABSTRACT

The city of Munster has approximately 280,000 inhabitants and is located in the north of the German region of North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) near the border with The Netherlands. The city of Munster does not have an explicit and comprehensive knowledge economy strategy, but several policies are related to the promotion of a knowledge economy. This chapter explores the knowledge economy strategies of Munster. It analyses the foundations of the knowledge economy for Munster. They include the knowledge base, the economic base, the quality of life, the accessibility, the urban diversity, the urban scale, and the social equity in the city. The chapter discusses Munster's knowledge economy activities. It explains how well the city (and the actors in it) manages to: attract and retain talented people; create new knowledge; apply new knowledge and make new combinations; and develop new growth clusters. The chapter contains conclusions and unfolds perspectives for Munster's position in the emerging knowledge economy.
