      ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers a general introduction of major characteristics of Chinese diplomacy since the early 1990s. It examines China's new diplomacy in Africa. The book deals with China's diplomacy in the Middle East. It shifts attention to Latin America and examines China's diplomatic activities in the backyard of the United States. The book considers China's relations with Central Asia and Russia. It surveys China's diplomacy in the South Pacific region. The book focuses on Sino-Southeast Asian Relations and various international responses to China's diplomatic activities in the developing world. The book summarizes the findings and further develops a framework based on social constructivism and "smart power" to observe and analyze China's diplomacy in the 21st century.
