ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how organizations can support their staff through life changes and difficult periods, by developing new ways of working so as to ensure a consistent high quality of work and productivity. Work–life balance is a key issue of today's world. The current patterns of working – which were developed centuries ago – are seen by young people as outdated and impractical. Work–life balance is relevant for all age groups. In the context of the older workforce if organizations are going to retain their older and valuable staff members and use available talent and personnel, new ways of working are a key solution. There are a variety of working options available and it is not always necessary to introduce sweeping reforms in order to maintain morale and motivation within our workforce. Teams with whom we have worked have generated some really creative ways of working that have enhanced team morale as well as performance.
