ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the factors that affect change in organizations and their likely impact on the older worker. Our scenario raises a number of issues that specifically affect the older worker. Jim raises a point about work insecurity. This is not something that this group of workers ever expected to face — particularly if they made certain career choices that were regarded as 'safe'. One of the most destructive elements in any business is the disgruntled, disappointed worker. The chapter presents some suggestions as to how to support older workers through continuous change. The way people respond to change will be a pattern that they have developed over the years and for many older workers they will have been doing it this way for 30+ years. The leader of the change initiative may or may not have an understanding of difference and needs to be given the information.
