ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the value of introducing mindful activities in order to support mindful moments in young children’s everyday activities, with a particular emphasis on how such activities can generate and enhance an ambience of focus and calm from which to engage in research with young children. It focuses on how one can use the power of stories to introduce the concept of mindfulness and can further encourage children to stop, listen, reflect on and understand their experiences. The chapter also focuses on material that facilitates working with children to help them learn to engage in mindful and calming breathing activities, create colourful, calming bottles, and use drawings to capture and share their responses to their worlds. It considers the performance of children’s meanings, engaging with theatre and music, and highlights simple exercises and games that can be useful in helping to access children’s meanings.
