ABSTRACT

Number flexes are routines that happen often. They are called number flexes because they build flexibility. These routines in particular go right for the flexibility muscle. The goal is to build fluency with an emphasis on accuracy, flexibility, and efficiency. Many of the routines show what they can look like at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year. It is important to think about the models and the strategies that students should be working with throughout the year as their knowledge base is expanded. Number flexes are routines that work specifically on computational fluency. One of these activities should be done every day so that students build their mathematical thinking muscle. Be sure to consider both types of Number Talks because they offer different types of thinking. Number flexes like Virtual Dice Roll and Virtual Cards give students interesting number generators to think conceptually, accurately, flexibly, and efficiently.
