ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the significance of the research findings for a Wesleyan spirituality today. It considers whether and how resignation is an appropriate concept in a twenty-first-century Western Christian environment; how sanctification might be understood today; and whether the spiritual discipline of habituating characteristic tempers of resignation and the symbiotic engagement of resignation and sanctification are still concepts which can and should be embraced today.

The chapter engages a number of conversation partners to explore the themes of the chapter. Sarah Coakley’s work on kenosis is discussed in respect of its use in twenty-first-century spirituality and theology, including a consideration of gender perspectives. Secondly, the chapter discusses resignation as performance, particularly engaging Gadamer and Wainwright. Finally, the chapter considers the use of resignation in a twenty-first-century setting and whether it still has valency.
