ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we bring together all of the perspectives on process to show how they translate into an actual clinical session. Here, we meet Jim, who initially presents with anxiety disorder, but toward the end of the session discloses early, untreated sexual abuse. We follow the second session with Jim, where we attempt to learn more about Jim’s trauma, but also stay acutely aware of not replicating the problem in the room, defining transference cues and watching for breaks in the process. The focus is on the micro-process, the knowing what to do and what not to do so that Jim can leave the session feeling safe, but also feeling understood and more hopeful.
