ABSTRACT

Social Work Education Enhancement Project (SWEEP) has brought information and experiences to Vietnam, and helped professionalize social work. Based on the success of the Training of Trainers (TOT) trainings, a consortium of university leaders and government representatives who participated in SWEEP adopted a formal agreement to continue to provide trainings to improve social work curriculum and advance social work education using the SWEEP TOT model. SWEEP was supported by a set of principles that maximized success in cross-cultural, international knowledge transfer. These principles are: learning as much as possible about the local context early in the project; using a sustainability approach, provide cultural immersion, conduct ongoing formative evaluations, and consistent and ongoing communication among the SWEEP team and with our partners. Vietnam provides an environment that is markedly different from that of the US historically, culturally, socially, and politically. For the SWEEP team, there was much to learn about the country throughout the project.
