ABSTRACT

Leadership at the university level is vital to the successful development of new educational programs. This chapter examines the need for building leadership capacity to advance social work education in an international context, with a focus on developing countries. It describes the leadership component of Social Work Education Enhancement Project (SWEEP) and strategies for building capacity in leadership and administration that included the following: leadership development, development of university-specific and collective strategic plans, and improving collaboration among leaders. Engagement of leaders was pivotal to both successful implementation of the SWEEP project and to the development of sustainable plans for continued advancement of social work education in Vietnam. Throughout the project, the SWEEP team always recognized university leaders as the experts in priorities and strategies for advancing social work education in Vietnam. The overall approach in the development of SWEEP leadership emphasized core values of collaboration, a focus on local knowledge and solutions, and capacity-building.
