ABSTRACT

Jerzy Marian Grotowski was always, in all matters, a practical being. At public meetings, he often admonished young actors for their confusion or inaction with one of his favorite aphorisms: when you don't know what to do, just do. Grotowski states that a bad instructor talks a lot and tries to describe the results of the exercises, what should happen. The Corporal exercises were developed in much the same manner, only here the departure point was several asanas of hatha yoga. The exercises of the Polish Laboratory Theatre described in Towards a Poor Theatre were developed more than 50 years ago, by a specific group of actors, from a specific culture, and in a specific time and place. The Motions is a very demanding exercise developed during the period of Theatre of Sources and further refined during Objective Drama and Art as Vehicle.
