ABSTRACT

Energy provides the power and mobility for economic well-being and modern lifestyles. Energy comes from a variety of sources and supports a wide range of activities, from transportation to manufacturing to heating and lighting to running computers. Local governments can make energy planning part of the comprehensive planning process. Energy planning is important for minimizing environmental impacts as well as maintaining community health and safety and a vibrant economy. The price of natural gas has fallen sharply with the increased supplies, making natural gas the likely bridge fuel to an eventual renewable energy economy. Renewable energy sources can reduce America's dependence on imported energy supplies and hence promote national security and economic sustainability. Energy conservation and energy efficiency can stretch energy supplies, decrease pollution, and promote economic development. Greater residential energy efficiency can come through improved building design and technologies.
