ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses major demographic and housing trends, employment and development projections, the extent of economic dependency, attractiveness characteristics, and major planning and development challenges in Megalopolis Megapolitan Cluster. The Megalopolis megapolitan cluster will see the biggest numerical change in ethnic composition of any megapolitan cluster. About a sixth of the population in the Megalopolis megapolitan cluster lives in counties that are classified as dependent, mostly on the manufacturing or federal and state government sectors. In many ways, the Megalopolis megapolitan cluster comes closest to having European-scale infrastructure systems as any, especially rail transportation. In 2010, there was sufficient employment in the Mega-lopolis megapolitan cluster to support about 14.5 billion square feet of nonresidential space, including industrial, commercial, and institutional uses. Between 2010 and 2040, the housing inventory of Megalopolis will grow from nearly 22 million units to nearly 29 million units, an increase of about 7.0 million homes — the most of any megapolitan cluster.
