ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on the socialisation of a Japanese child, converting a new-born baby into a human being who understands the language and expectations of other children and the adults in Japanese society. Important Japanese concepts are introduced, which explain how social life is classified into people sharing various inside groups, and how language and behaviour are adjusted when addressing these and others outside the groups. Important principles of hierarchy and equality, reciprocity, cooperation and peer group pressure are explained, as is the development of the self. The last section looks at attitudes to the body and health in Japan.
