ABSTRACT

I hope this book will take your filmmaking to the next level, advancing your career. That's why I wrote it. I wish I'd owned a book like this when I took my first filmmaking class. While I was earning my PhD at New York University, I took a 16mm immersive film course during six weeks in the summer. We used light meters, shot in black and white on Arriflex S cameras with 100 feet of 16mm film. And we had to make our shots and cut the film on a Steenbeck flatbed, delivering a story on two minutes of film. There was no time to tell an audience how to think or telegraph inner thoughts through surface dialogue.
